    Pressure and force data for a flat wing and a warped conical wing having a shockless recompression at Mach 1.62

    A conical nonlinear flow computer code was used to design a warped (cambered) wing which would produce a supercritical expansion and shockless recompression of the crossflow at a lift coefficient of 0.457, an angle of attack of 10 deg, and a Mach number of 1.62. This cambered wing and a flat wing the same thickness distribution were tested over a range of Mach numbers from 1.6 to 2.0. For both models the forward 60 percent is purely conical geometry. Results obtained with the cambered wing demonstrated the design features of a supercritical expansion and a shockless recompression, whereas results obtained with the flat wing indicated the presence of crossflow shocks.     Commercial Fishing Port Development in North Florida

    The author has identified the following significant results. Seven major counties were examined: Escambia, Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Nassau, and Duval. Population and economic activity were reviewed, along with commercial fishing and port facilities. Recommendations for five northwest Florida counties were based on interpretation of aerial photographs, satellite imagery, an aerial survey site visit, and published data. Major needs in Pensacola included docking, ice supply, and net and engine repair services. Costs for additional docks, an ice plant, and gear storage were estimated at 3,658,600.PortusersinPanamaCityidentifiedadditionaldockingandgearstorageasprimaryneeds,alongwithgearrepairandamarinerailway.Estimatedcostsfordockandgearstoragewere3,658,600.     The Kinetics and Thermodynamics of Polyglutamine Aggregation

    Protein misfolding as a result of polyglutamine (polyQ) repeat expansion plays a crucial role in the development a class of neurodegenerative disorders. These disorders are characterized by expansions in unique proteins, but share one common factor: polyQ repeat expansions beyond a pathological threshold, usually near 35 Glns. PolyQ containing peptides and proteins aggregate into amyloid-like fibrils, in both disease states and in vitro. While recent studies of simple polyQ aggregation have led to the development of a mechanism describing the fibril formation pathway, the kinetic and thermodynamic roles of even small modifications to the amino acid sequence are unclear. The goal of this work was to gain more specific information regarding the biophysical roles of terminal charge and Gln repeat length in the aggregation mechanism of simple polyQ peptides. We found that increases in both repeat length and attraction between terminal flanking sequences led to enhancements in fibril stability and spontaneous aggregation ability. In general, mutations in polyQ sequences that enhance their ability to assume a β-hairpin structure (the proposed building block of polyQ fibrils), and to associate with each other facilitate fibrillization through a nucleated polymerization pathway with a monomeric nucleus. The data discussed here have made significant contributions to our understanding of the basic aggregation properties of polyQ peptides, and have implications that can be directly translated to polyQ disease pathogenesis

    Amazon River infl uence on nitrogen fi xation in the western tropical North Atlantic

    We measured rates of N- and C-fixation with a direct tracer method in regions of the western tropical North Atlantic influenced by the Amazon River plume during the high flow period of 2010 (May–June 2010). We found distinct regional variations in N-fixation activity, with the lowest rates in the plume proper and the highest rates in the plume margins and in offshore waters. A comparison of our N- and C-fixation measurements showed that the relative contribution of N-fixation to total primary production increased from the plume core toward oceanic waters, and that most of the C-fixation in this system was supported by sources of nitrogen other than those derived from biological N-fixation, or diazotrophy. We complemented these rate experiments with measurements of the δ15N of suspended particles (δ15PN), which documented the important and often dominant role of diazotrophs in supplying nitrogen to particulate organic matter in the water column. These coupled measurements revealed that small phytoplankton contributed more new nitrogen to the particulate nitrogen pool than larger phytoplankton. We used a habitat classification method to assess the fac- tors that control diazotrophic activity and contribution to the suspended particle pool, both of which increased from the plume toward oceanic waters. Our findings provide an important constraint on the role of the Amazon plume in creating distinct niches and roles for diazotrophs in the nutrient and carbon budgets of the western tropical North Atlantic

    Mixing of Supersonic Streams

    The Strutjet approach to Rocket Based Combined Cycle (RBCC) propulsion depends upon fuel-rich flows from the rocket nozzles and turbine exhaust products mixing with the ingested air for successful operation in the ramjet and scramjet modes. It is desirable to delay this mixing process in the air-augmented mode of operation present during low speed flight. A model of the Strutjet device has been built and is undergoing test to investigate the mixing of the streams as a function of distance from the Strutjet exit plane during simulated low speed flight conditions. Cold flow testing of a 1/6 scale Strutjet model is underway and nearing completion. Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) diagnostic methods are being employed to observe the mixing of the turbine exhaust gas with the gases from both the primary rockets and the ingested air simulating low speed, air augmented operation of the RBCC. The ratio of the pressure in the turbine exhaust duct to that in the rocket nozzle wall at the point of their intersection is the independent variable in these experiments. Tests were accomplished at values of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 for this parameter. Qualitative results illustrate the development of the mixing zone from the exit plane of the model to a distance of about 10 rocket nozzle exit diameters downstream. These data show the mixing to be confined in the vertical plane for all cases, The lateral expansion is more pronounced at a pressure ratio of 1.0 and suggests that mixing with the ingested flow would be likely beginning at a distance of 7 nozzle exit diameters downstream of the nozzle exit plane

    An experimental and computational investigation of structure and magnetism in pyrite Co1x_{1-x}Fex_xS2_2: Chemical bonding and half-metallicity

    Bulk samples of the pyrite chalcogenide solid solutions Co1x_{1-x}Fex_xS2_2 0 <= x <= 0.5, have been prepared and their crystal structures and magnetic properties studied by X-ray diffraction and SQUID magnetization measurements. Across the solution series, the distance between sulfur atoms in the persulfide (S22_2^{2-}) unit remains nearly constant. First principles electronic structure calculations using experimental crystal structures as inputs point to the importance of this constant S-S distance, in helping antibonding S-S levels pin the Fermi energy. In contrast hypothetical rock-salt CoS is not a good half metal, despite being nearly isostructural and isoelectronic. We use our understanding of the Co1x_{1-x}Fex_xS2_2 system to make some prescriptions for new ferromagnetic half-metals.Comment: 8 pages including 9 figure

    Spontaneous virologic suppression in HIV controllers is independent of delayed-type hypersensitivity test responsiveness

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) testing, an in vivo assessment of cell-mediated immunity, is a predictor of HIV disease progression beyond CD4 cell count. We investigated whether preserved DTH responsiveness was characteristic of HIV controllers compared to non-controllers and individuals on suppressive HAART.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>DTH testing consisted of ≥ 3 recall antigens applied approximately every 6 months. DTH responses were classified by the number of positive skin tests: anergic (0), partial anergic (1), or non-anergic (≥ 2). HIV controllers were compared to treatment naïve non-controllers (n = 3822) and a subgroup of non-controllers with VL < 400 copies/mL on their initial HAART regimen (n = 491). The proportion of non-anergic results at first DTH testing was similar for HIV controllers compared to non-controllers (81.9% vs. 77.6%; P = 0.22), but tended to be greater in HIV controllers compared to the HAART subgroup (81.9% vs. 74.5%; P = 0.07). Complete anergy was observed in 14 (10.1%) HIV controllers with CD4 counts ≥ 400 cells/uL. For longitudinal testing, the average percentage of non-anergic DTH determinations per participant was higher in HIV controllers compared to non-controllers (81.2 ± 31.9% vs. 70.7 ± 36.8%; P = 0.0002), however this difference was eliminated with stratification by CD4 count: 200-399 (83.4 ± 35.6% vs. 71.9 ± 40.9%; P = 0.15) and > 400 cells/uL (81.2 ± 31.5% vs. 80.4 ± 32.7%; P = 0.76).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Spontaneous virologic control was not associated with DTH responsiveness, and several HIV controllers were anergic despite having elevated CD4 counts. These findings suggest that cellular immunity assessed by DTH is not a principal factor contributing to spontaneous virologic suppression in HIV controllers.</p

    DASH: Dynamic Attention-Based Substructure Hierarchy for Partial Charge Assignment

    We present a robust and computationally efficient approach for assigning partial charges of atoms in molecules. The method is based on a hierarchical tree constructed from attention values extracted from a graph neural network (GNN), which was trained to predict atomic partial charges from accurate quantum-mechanical (QM) calculations. The resulting dynamic attention-based substructure hierarchy (DASH) approach provides fast assignment of partial charges with the same accuracy as the GNN itself, is software-independent, and can easily be integrated in existing parametrization pipelines as shown for the Open force field (OpenFF). The implementation of the DASH workflow, the final DASH tree, and the training set are available as open source / open data from public repositories

    Bonding in MgSi and AlMgSi Compounds Relevant to AlMgSi Alloys

    The bonding and stability of MgSi and AlMgSi compounds relevant to AlMgSi alloys is investigated with the use of (L)APW+(lo) DFT calculations. We show that the β\beta and β\beta'' phases found in the precipitation sequence are characterised by the presence of covalent bonds between Si-Si nearest neighbour pairs and covalent/ionic bonds between Mg-Si nearest neighbour pairs. We then investigate the stability of two recently discovered precipitate phases, U1 and U2, both containing Al in addition to Mg and Si. We show that both phases are characterised by tightly bound Al-Si networks, made possible by a transfer of charge from the Mg atoms.Comment: 11 pages, 30 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
